Orange Spain touts successful 5G SA data connection pilot

Orange Spain has deployed Open radio access network (RAN) nodes connected to a Core Cloud Native 5G Standalone (SA) network.

The telco says this development represents another step in the MNO’s strategy to achieve technological leadership in the network after becoming, in February 2023, the first operator in the country to launch a commercial 5G SA network (5G+).

Combining Open Ran with a 5G SA network brings several benefits, the telco said. These include the ability to deploy a 5G network, core and access, in less than one hour.

Other benefits include the ability to use dynamic end-to-end management of virtual networks, prioritise traffic and following security principles to enable the provision of critical communications services; and optimising energy consumption by keeping resource use to the minimum necessary to promote sustainability and energy efficiency.
