New data by Counterpoint Research suggests that 51% of all smartphones sold in January 2022 were 5G capable.
According to Counterpoint, China, North America and Western Europe were the biggest drivers for this growth. China has the highest 5G handset penetration globally at 84% while North America and Western Europe reached 73% and 76% respectively.
Counterpoint says Apple was a big driver of this increase. iPhones have supported 5G since the release of the iPhone 12 in October 2020 and many consumers have since upgraded to these newer models.
Meanwhile, in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America, 4G handsets continue to dominate.
