German government aims for full 5G population coverage by 2030

This goal was unveiled by the Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport in its new Gigabit strategy plan.

The plan aims to boost 5G and fibre rollout and ensure better mobile coverage on railway lines.

To achieve this, the government plans on speeding up the infrastructure planning processes and supporting mobile operators to cover underserved areas.

A further goal is ensuring trains are better connected. The government has promised to continue the use of the GSM-R funding programme, as well as giving Deutsche Bahn access to the 900 MHz spectrum band for 4G and 5G services.

Finally, the strategy sets out a goal of tripling the number of fibre optic connections by 2025.
