The operator is leading the new initiative as part of a wider program funded by the German government.
Called 6G NeXt, the research project is funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Nine other partners are are involved with the project including DFKI, Fraunhofer FOKUS, LogicWay and SeeReal Technologies.
6G NeXt will investigate 6G requirements for demanding virtual reality and extended reality applications (collectively known as ‘XR’). It will also develop an end-to-end system with a software layer.
“6G NeXt is focused on developing a foundational infrastructure where we can test and validate advanced immersive XR experiences even in the most demanding use cases,” says Alex Jinsung Choi, Head of T-Labs at Deutsche Telekom. “We are excited to collaborate with leading German startups and SMEs who will contribute their ideas and requirements for this innovative technology direction.”
