Global smartphone shipments have risen to 289.4 million units.
According to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), the smartphone market continues to grow globally. Samsung shipped the most smartphones, selling 60.1 million units in the quarter, while Apple shipped 50.1 million, and Xiaomi shipped 40.8 million.
Transsion saw the biggest year-on-year growth, with an 84.9% increase in shipments since last year. Transsion is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer which primarily targets markets in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania through its sub-brands Tecno, Itel and Infinix.

Xiaomi meanwhile saw the second biggest jump, with a 33.8% increase in shipments since last year. Apple’s shipments meanwhile have fallen by 9.6% since last year.
IDC views the latest figure as a sign of strength for the smartphone industry.
“Firstly, we continue to see growth in value and average selling prices (ASPs) as consumers opt for more expensive devices knowing they will hold onto their devices longer. Secondly, there is a shift in power among the Top 5 companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world.”
“The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed,” said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team.
