WindTre and Iliad have launched a joint venture company called Zefiro Net which will facilitate infastructure sharing in rural areas of Italy.
The announcement comes after the companies received regulatory approval for their plan by Italy’s Communications Regulatory Authority in August of 2021. WindTre and Iliad will both hold 50% of Zefiro Net’s shares.
With over 20 million subscribers, WindTre is Italy’s largest mobile operators. Iliad meanwhile ranks 4th with just shy of 10 million subscribers.
Iliad says the launch of the company will accelerate its 5G network rollout in rural parts of Italy, where 26.8% of the country’s population reside.
