India to auction more 5G spectrum

The multiband award is due to take place on May 20th.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released a notice to invite applications for its upcoming 5G spectrum auction. The final list of bidders will be published on May 9th and the auction is scheduled to start on May 20th.

Spectrum licences will be made available in 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2.1 GHz, 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz, 3.3 GHz and 26 GHz bands.

The auction will include bands that were previously left unsold at the country’s first major 5G auction in 2022. It is estimated that 71% of all spectrum was awarded at the time, but some bands remained unsold.

Since the country’s first 5G award, Indian mobile network operators (MNOs) have invested significantly in their 5G rollouts. Last August, the DoT announced that a total of 308,466 5G base stations had been deployed in the country.
