The Spanish mobile operator is working together with La Princesa hospital in Madrid to develop the pilot.
Telefónica says the pilot will aim to help in the rehabilitation of patients with multiple sclerosis. The project will be funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation.
Patients at the hospital will use virtual reality (VR) headsets as part of their rehabilitation process. These VR headsets will use Telefónica’s 5G network, which it says enables a low-latency and high-speed connection. The operator also says edge computing has been deployed.
Sessions with patients are expected to be carried out in the coming months with the aim of evaluating and collecting their impressions on this innovative way of performing rehabilitation therapy.
