The operator will build a marine-focused private network in collaboration with Nokia in the port of Plymouth.
Vodafone will deploy the network at Smart Sound Plymouth, a 1,000 square kilometre water space used for testing and development by the marine sector.
The network will use both 4G and 5G technology to provide coverage. Vodafone says it will be free to use for local and international businesses to create and develop marine 5G use cases.
Smart Sound Connect is funded by the non-profit Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership.
