The operator made the announcement at Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona.
Vodafone Group Chief Technology Officer Johan Wibergh says the operator plans on using Open RAN technology in 30,000 sites across Europe by 2030. These include both 4G and 5G sites.
Vodafone says this rollout will begin in rural areas, which will benefit from new Open RAN masts. The operator also promises to reuse equipment that is replaced to avoid unnecessary waste.
Open RAN is a technology that allows operators to mix and match components and software from different suppliers in their towers and base stations.
