Vodafone UK announced coverage in eight new cities in mid-of July 2019
At the beginning of July 2019, Vodafone UK commercially launched 5G services in seven cities across the country. Mid-of July 2019, it announced coverage in eight new cities. 5G is now available in Birkenhead, Bolton, Gatwick, Lancaster, Newbury, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Wolverhampton.
The mobile carrier plans to further expand its 5G coverage in Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Portsmouth, Reading, Southampton and Warrington by year-end 2019.
On July 3rd, 2019, Vodafone UK launched its 5G services in on in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London. The company unveiled a new range of tariffs that offer unlimited data for both its 4G and 5G networks. Vodafone was the second operator to launch 5G commercial services in the UK after EE in May 2019. Three has planned to launch in August, O2 (Telefonica) expects 5G in autumn 2019.
Last year, U.K. operators acquired spectrum for the future provision of 5G services. Vodafone won 50 MHz in the 3.4GHz band, paying 378 million GBP (422 million EUR). BT-owned EE won 40 MHz for paying 303 million GBP (342 million EUR). Three obtained 20 MHz of 3.4 GHz spectrum for 151.3 million GBP (171 million EUR). Finally, Telefonica-owned O2 secured 40 MHz for 318 million GBP (359 million EUR).
