The companies claim the broadcast is the first of its kind.
Three Sweden, Ericsson and media production company Mobilelinks announced the first live 5G standalone broadcast at the 1 June Stockholm Marathon. The broadcast, streamed from a 5G broadcasting camera in the lead car at the 45th running of the race, ensured a reliable, high-quality video uplink stream, they said.
5G broadcasting is more efficient and cost-effect than traditional satellite broadcasting because it eliminates the need for expensive, large, on-site crews, gear and the hiring of satellite links, Ericsson said.
The 5G SA network and network slicing mean media outfits and supporting mobile operators can deliver high-quality and lag-free video even from locations with dense flows of people and high mobile network traffic. This promises new opportunities not only for major broadcasters, but also for local broadcasting companies and TV networks covering small events with limited resources.
