Telefonica Germany activates first Open RAN small cells

Telefonica says the new radio cells will support inner city customers with higher capacity.

Telefonica Germany has activated mini-radio cells using open RAN technology in Munich. The radio cells are attached to a building facade in Munich’s Gartnerplatz district and will supplement the existing 4G and 5G network in the area.

Chief Technology & Information Officer Mallik Rao says “With our ORAN Small Cells, we are launching a model project for major German cities in Munich. From the customer’s point of view, they are a particular benefit where a particularly large number of people are out and about with their smartphones.”

Telefonica says the installation of “pure” 5G Open RAN mini radio cells will follow later this year.
