Swedish regulator sees drop in number of mobile voice calls as 5G use grows

The number of voice calls has decreased for the first time, while 5G now accounts for 14% of subscriptions.

According to the Post and Telecom Agency’s (PTS) 2022 annual market report, call minutes were down 6% at 39 billion minutes, the equivalent of around 250 minutes per subscription per month. This could be because some voice calls shifted to other communications apps, or because the increased usage during Covid lockdowns declined.

PTS market data showed that at the end of 2022, around 2 million Swedes used 5G services, representing 14% of all mobile subscriptions. In addition, mobile data traffic rose by nearly 30%, and overall data traffic on mobile networks has tripled in the last four years.
