The Spanish Ministry of Digital Transformation will extend the licences at no extra cost.
The Spanish government has finalised its extension of all existing mobile spectrum licences. Licences that were previously due to expire at the end of the decade will now last for a further 10 years.
The extension applies to bands used for older generations of technology (800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz) and Spain’s first 5G band, 3.5 GHz. The ministry said that all mobile bands could be used in future for other technologies like 5G and 6G.
The extension “will mean saving hundreds of millions of euros for operators, which can be invested directly in deployment and innovation,” said Maria González Veracruz, Spain’s Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure.
