Romania has sold licences in the 700 MHz, 1500 MHz, 2.6 GHz and 3.6 GHz bands, yet 24% of the total spectrum remained unsold.
Romanian regulator Ancom has announced the results of its multi-band auction. In total, the auction raised €432.6 million. Three major mobile operators Orange, Vodafone and Digi all won licences.
Mobile operator Orange was the biggest spender in the award. The company paid a total of €264.6 for licences in the 700 MHz and 3.6 GHz bands. Vodafone Romania spent €122.5 million while Digi spent €45.5 million.
Ancom revealed that only 76% of the total spectrum was sold, which has led to some describing the award as “underwhelming”.
Auction winners will be required to cover 70% of the country’s population as well as most urban areas, highways, international airports and railways.
