The Belgian telco has agreed to purchase additional spectrum from an IT services company.
Proximus has signed an agreement to acquire 20 MHz of spectrum from NRB. NRB had originally purchased the spectrum in Belgium’s 2022 spectrum auction but decided to sell its holdings following its decision to scale back plans to operate its own mobile network.
The company says Belgium’s telecommunications regulator BIPT has given the green light to the exchange which will likely go through once the regulator completes a separate award procedure it has planned for a different portion of the 3.6 GHz band spectrum.
Proximus says the additional spectrum will help improve the mobile experience for its customers, add more capacity when needed and pave the way for better performance in terms of throughput and latency.
Proximus initially paid €56.3 million for 100 MHz of 3.6 GHz band spectrum in 2022. Following this acquisition, it will own a total of 120 MHz in the band.
