The Spanish mobile operator has announced the commercial launch of its standalone 5G network (SA 5G) in select cities.
Orange is calling its standalone network “5G+”. It will be available in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville. The operator says its 5G network covers 90% of the population in these four cities.
Standalone 5G is a network architecture that operates independently of existing LTE networks, allowing for various improvements over non-standalone networks.
Orange says it’s the first operator in Spain and one of the first operators in Europe to launch commercial 5G SA technology. It says the technology will provide various benefits including better indoor 5G coverage, lower latency and greater security.
