The German mobile operator has signed a cooperation agreement with Autobahn GmbH to improve coverage.
According to the deal, Autobahn GmbH will search for and provide suitable federally owned land along the motorways for O2 Telefónica to build new 5G sites. Additionally, requirements for land use will be simplified and sites that were previously rejected will be reconsidered.
O2 Telefónica says it plans to expand its coverage along the 13,200km motorway network with additional 5G sites. It says this will lay the foundation for future technological leaps and increasing mobile data traffic. The operator says it is going further than existing coverage requirements imposed on it after the 2015 and 2019 spectrum auctions.
“The agreement allows O2 Telefónica to accelerate the expansion of the network along the motorways. Together with Autobahn GmbH, we want to identify hurdles in the approval process, remove them quickly and develop suitable properties for the construction of new mobile communications sites. This benefits our approximately 45 million customers when they travel on the federal highways,” says Valentina Daiber, Board Member for Legal and Corporate Affairs at O2 Telefónica.
