O2 has now made its standalone 5G (5G SA) service available in dozens of cities.
O2, which operates locally as Movistar says that 5G SA services are now available in the cities of Avila, Barcelona, Castellon, Ferrol, Gran Canaria, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Segovia, Seville and Vigo.
The operator launched 5G SA in July 2023, initially covering 11 cities with the technology. Now it expects to have reached extensive 5G SA coverage in most cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants.
Its competitor Orange claimed in June that its 5G SA network would reach 30% of the population by the end of June.
5G standalone (also known as 5G SA) is a network configuration that operates independently of existing LTE networks, allowing for various improvements over non-standalone networks. It can enable several benefits, including increased performance, improved end-user battery life and the enablement of new features such as 5G network slicing.
