Nokia has announced it is working with mobile operator Telia to build a private 5G standalone network for Agnico Eagle Finland Oy, which operators a gold mine in northern Finland.
The Kittilä mine is the largest primary gold producer in Europe. Nokia says the network will support both above ground and below-ground operations reaching depths of up to one kilometre.
The network will cover an extensive tunnel system in the mine and connect people, equipment, sensors, devices and vehicles.
Nokia says the mine will benefit from real-time data processing, which will support Industry 4.0 use cases such as autonomous vehicles, high-precision positioning and group communications.
The network will be deployed in phases and is expected to be completed in October 2022.
