1&1 has begun to roll out its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service in Frankfurt and Karlsruhe.
Dubbed “1&1 5G at home”, the mobile operator says its new service will be complementary to existing DSL and fibre offerings. It promises speeds of up to 500 Mbit/s. The service starts at €19.99 a month for 50gb of data.
While this initial rollout is limited, the mobile operator says it hopes to expand this service to 50 locations in the coming weeks. 1&1 is working with Rakuten Symphony to build its OpenRAN 5G network.
1&1 currently operates as a virtual mobile network operator and broadband provider. However, the company is working towards becoming Germany’s fourth national mobile operator. It will eventually need to cover 50% of the country’s population with 5G services by 2030 as set out in the licence conditions attached to the spectrum that it acquired in 2019.
