The two organisations hope to encourage cooperation between the mobile and satellite industries.
The Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA) represents the global satellite industry, while the GSMA represents the mobile industry. Both organisations have agreed to work together to foster the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, i.e. satellite and mobile networks.
In recent years, there has been significant interest in technologies that blend satellite connectivity with terrestrial mobile connectivity. In particular, the concept of satellite direct-to-device (D2D) services has emerged. Satellite D2D is being pursued by various companies including Apple and SpaceX.
“This is fundamental in creating a seamless and ubiquitous communications infrastructure, that will help accelerate digital inclusion and digital transformation, including in areas that are currently unserved or underserved”, says Isabelle Mauro, Director General of the GSOA.
“This collaborative agreement marks a significant milestone in the evolution of telecommunications, signalling a shift towards a more interconnected and resilient global network infrastructure,” says Mats Granryd, Director General at the GSMA.
