German regulator expands its mapping tool to track 5G standalone deployment

The Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA) says the new tool provides a “clear overview” of where the technology is available.

The map reveals that 92% of Germany receives 5G coverage provided by at least one mobile operator. The proportion covered by 5G SA meanwhile stands at 90%.

Although 5G SA coverage is already very high, the coverage provided varies by operator. Deutsche Telekom appears to have the most expensive 5G SA network, while Telefonica’s and Vodafone’s network are less extensive. The full map can be viewed here.

5G standalone (also known as 5G SA) is a network configuration that operates independently of existing LTE networks, allowing for various improvements over non-standalone networks. The BNetzA says that 5G SA will bring higher data rates and lower latency and will enable use cases such as advanced IoT applications. Eventually, it says the technology will also make autonomous driving applications possible in the future.
