1&1, which currently operates as an MVNO (Mobile virtual network operator) says its network will feature 1000 base stations.
1&1 will become Germany’s fourth mobile operator when it launches its network. The firm says it will initially offer its 5G services for home fixed wireless access and later expand this service for mobile use.
The announcement was made by Ralph Dommermuth, CEO of United Internet. United Internet is the parent company of 1&1.
1&1 will eventually need to cover 50% of Germany’s population with 5G services by 2030. This requirement is set out in the licence conditions attached to the 5G spectrum that 1&1 acquired in 2019.
