The French regulator Arcep says that introducing 5G in the 3.6 GHz band will lead to reduced energy consumption when compared to a 4G-only network.
This news was revealed in a recent study published by the regulator, which found that although initial energy consumption will be higher, 5G will eventually lead to a 10x decrease in consumption.
Arcep says we can expect to see this drop in consumption in 2023 with the full effect becoming clear in 2028.
The regulator says that this study takes into account predicted growth rates as well as equipment lifecycles.
Looking ahead, ARCEP says it will begin work to assess the energy consumption impact of a 5G rollout in 26 GHz ahead of the country’s planned auction of this band.
