Deutsche Telekom launches 5G private network at paper mill

The German mobile network operator (MNO) has announced a new campus network for the paper manufacturer Hamburger Containerboard.

Deutsche Telekom has deployed over 120 5G antennas to cover 350,000 square meters at the site, which is located in Spremberg in eastern Germany. The company is using standalone 5G technology for the network, which it says is the largest campus network site in Europe.

Hamburger Containerboard will also work with the consulting firm Bayerische Funknetz to help digitalise the site.

“We already produce around 840,000 tons of paper annually at our site in Spremberg,” says Head of Digitalization Operations at Hamburger Containerboard Michael Krumay. “With 5G, we will now additionally optimize the information, logistics and production processes on site.”

Deutsche Telekom says the network will use the 3.7 – 3.8 GHz band, which is reserved for campus network deployments in Germany.
