China’s regulator, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) made the announcement last week.
MIIT’s Vice Minister Xin Guobin says that the country is also home to more than 10,000 5G-powered industrial internet projects. China’s mobile phone user base meanwhile has grown to 805 million by the end of last year.
According to the estimates of Chinese research institutions, 5G technology was expected to help create an economic output of CNY1.86 trillion ($261.36 billion) in 2023, an increase of 29% compared with the figure recorded in 2022, Xin said.
China has a very extensive 5G rollout. The country is ranked fourth in Ookla’s global speed test ranking with an average download speed of 160 Mbps.
