Italy raises electromagnetic limits to promote 5G deployment

The Ministry of Business and Made in Italy said that the law will promote the development of the Italian 5G economy with high-performance networks.

The new EMF limit will be 15 volts per meter (V/m), more than double the previous limit of 6 V/m. The new limit, however, is still far below the limit recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which suggests 61 V/m.

The change will likely be welcomed by mobile operators. Mobile operators’ association Asstel has previously complained that stringent limits have forced Italian operators to deploy more transmitters, leading to higher costs for network deployment and a greater environmental impact in terms of energy consumption and visual pollution in the form of antennas.

The new emission limits came into force on the 29th of April 2024. The Ministry has set up a Frequently Asked Questions page to respond to questions and observations from mobile operators.
