Since 2018, a number of 5G networks have been launched.

In Europe, 5G is available in 24 European Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden) and outside the EU, in Norway, Switzerland, and the UK). In Asia, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand provide 5G services. In North America, 5G services have been available in the USA since 2018 and in Canada since June 2020.

The covid-19 slowed the 5G deployment but adoption is impressive in Asia: China’s vice-minister of industry and information technology communicated in early 2021 that a total of 718,000 5G base stations were built in China in 2020. About 100,000 5G base stations were built in 2019. In South Korea, 5G subscriptions reached more than 12 million at the end of January 2021. In Japan where 5G was launched in March 2020, the number of 5G modules sold by NTT DoCoMo reached 500,000 as of the end of October 2020.
