1,800 companies joined DoCoMo’s 5G Open partner program that expects to reach 5,000 partners by 2021

Japanese telecom operator NTT DoCoMo plans to launch pre-commercial 5G services in September 2019 to prepare for the commercial launch expected by mid-2020. 1,800 companies joined DoCoMo’s 5G Open partner program that expects to reach 5,000 partners by 2021. The program’s objective is to create 5G-based solutions.

NTT DoCoMo also collaborates with Tobu Railway to trial mmWave technologies at Tokyo Skytree Town. Their goal is to research and define the technical conditions for using 28 GHz band (and potentially other spectrum frequencies) in urban areas.

Nokia signed a contract with NTT DoCoMo at the beginning of the year to provide the Japanese operator with the next-generation equipment needed for the future commercial launch.
