Huawei promotes 5.5G vision at Mobile World Congress

The company proposed a new standard for 5G at a summit in Barcelona.

The company describes 5.5G as an evolution of 5G. Huawei says 5.5G will need to deliver a 10-fold increase in network performance over 5G.

This includes a 10x increase in data speeds from 1 Gbit/s to 10 Gbit/s as well as an increase in the number of IoT devices to 100 billion. Networks will also need to see a drastic reduction in energy use. Huawei says 5.5G will use a tenth of the energy that they consume today.

With these capabilities in place, Huawei predicts 5.5G networks will enable a boom in immersive interactive experiences, like VR gaming in 24K resolution, and glasses-free 3D video. THe company also says the user base of these services will grow 100-fold to 1 billion.

Huawei has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Saudi Arabian mobile operator STC to work towards the 5.5G era.
